Sam has it all figured out…nearly. He knows exactly what he wants to do for his business…he thinks. Maybe. It’s almost close to being finished. He’s not sure. Maybe he’s ready? The what if’s start running through Sam’s mind as he seeks to navigate next steps with his business. Has he done enough? Maybe he needs more time! It’s common to be unsure of how to navigate uncharted territory, and the what if’s come in HOT. Have we done enough? Are we there yet? There’s only one way to find out - develop an MVP.
Roadblock: Waiting until everything is perfect to start.
There’s a saying around the startup world that goes something like this: If you aren’t somewhat embarrassed by your first version of what you launch, you probably waited too long to start. Businesses and organizations are constantly evolving and adapting (at least they should be), and if you think your product is perfect, you missed a key segment of people who couldn’t experience it sooner, and you might just be further along. Another popular saying that “Perfect is the Enemy of Good”. Sometimes you just have to do what is good. Sure, it could always be better, but you can always change it as you go. The iPhone just celebrated it’s 10 year anniversary at the time of this writing. Do you remember the original iPhone? Maybe you had one, maybe you have no clue what it even looked like. I had one and quite honestly, looking back, it was basically a hunk of junk compared to what is being offered now. But at the time, it was revolutionary. What if Apple had waited until they developed the iPhone 7 to release this proprietary new product. We’ll tell you what. Someone else would have done it. Guaranteed. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Solution: Develop an MVP.
Most Valuable Player? Not in this case. In startup speak, MVP is short for Minimum Viable Product, Program, or Service. Arriving at MVP means that you’ve developed something for people to use and they are willing to exchange time, resources, or money for it. This entails developing something and testing it on a small scale to see what you can do to improve it before you continue to grow your organization or fully build out your product line and organizational structure.
