It’s no secret that once the holiday season rolls around we have a heightened awareness of finding the perfect gift. If you’re anything like me, you’re on the prowl for items which are unique, beautiful, and support local businesses. Wildflower Roots fits the bill perfectly. Founded by Meredith Partida, Wildflower Roots offers clean, gorgeous pieces for the conscious shopper. We sat down with Meredith and asked her some questions about her business and her love for the vendor community.
What prompted you to start your business and when did you start?
I started Wildflower Roots in the spring of 2015 after just spending a year in India with Purpose Jewelry as their jewelry design intern. Getting to design jewelry from research stage to the seeing the pieces come to life was just the creative thrill that I couldn’t shake. I wanted to keep creating jewelry and create it for the everyday woman using my favorite metal, brass. All of my pieces are handmade and designed by me with your everyday life in mind.
What is your favorite thing about running a business selling handmade goods?
My favorite part is getting to meet other handmade vendors and get to know my amazing loyal customers. I never could have imagined the amazing people I’d get to know through running a handmade business. And one of the best perks of selling handmade jewelry is seeing people wear it! I’ve seen a few pieces out in the world worn by people I don’t know and it’s an indescribable experience when it happens. What an honor it is to have people buy and wear Wildflower Roots jewelry.
What is the biggest challenge?
Currently, my biggest challenge is creating space to keep coming up with new ideas. The hustle and bustle of everyday life loves to distract me from the creative design process. And of course with any small business, you alone are the maker, designer, seller, marketing director, social media guru, financial director, and so much more. Wearing all the different hats can be a challenge!
What do you enjoy about the handmade vendor community?
The friendships! I had no idea that I would make so many incredible friends I would out of showing up to pop ups and events. And with the friendships comes the mutual support and cheering on. Even if we only ever see each other at pop-ups we are always supporting via Instagram and Facebook, buying each other’s products and sharing with everyone what our cool friends do.
Why should somebody buy handmade/local when they could get something similar at a large store at a cheaper price?
When you buy handmade/local you are being a part of a bigger story than buying something from a large store. You are cheering on your community; people who have gifts and passions that are being brave enough to risk putting their talents out into the world. Find a handful of handmade/local businesses that you love and be their cheerleaders, buy their products & show up to their events; consequently, the relationships and community to come out of that support is priceless!
What are you most excited about this holiday season?
I am most excited about the handmade/local gifts I get to pick out for the people I love. I know that sounds cheesy and obvious with this blog interview but nothing excites me more than finding the perfect present for the perfect person. Giving is the best part of the holiday season!
